Our Heritage
Founded on a legacy of excellence, Ocean Fish Group has grown from a small family business to a leader in the seafood industry.
For seven generations, the Lakeman family has fished from the Cornish port of Mevagissey, their home for over 400 years. Over time, they transitioned from wooden boats in the 16th century to a modern fleet. Gradually, they transformed fishing into a thriving business.
Ocean Fish was founded in 1989 by Edward Lakeman and by1992 was firmly established as a leader in the seafood industry. Over the years Ocean Fish continued to flourish and establish itself as Cornwall’s oldest fishing and fish processing import-export business supplying large UK and European retail, wholesale and food serve customers through its unique consolidated supply chain – quota – catching – market – processing – through to the consumer.
In November 2025 Ocean Fish became part of Fortuna Group, marking a significant step in its evolution and strengthening UK operations. Fortuna, the largest fishing and marine services company in the British Overseas Territories is committed to strengthening the Ocean Fish Group for the future and recognise the cultural, social and economic importance of seafood to Cornwall and the UK.

Today, with the successful management of Newlyn Fish Market and a magnificent fleet landing daily into Newlyn’s tidal port, Ocean Fish remains deeply rooted in the local community. Moreover, we are proud to provide employment opportunities for the next generation while actively collaborating with the Newlyn community to strengthen and sustain the future of Cornwall’s fishing industry. Furthermore, our ongoing commitment ensures that this historic trade not only continues to thrive for years to come but also preserves its rich heritage, ultimately creating a strong foundation for future growth.
