On Thursday 31 July, W Stevenson & Sons welcomed Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed and Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs Daniel Zeichner to Newlyn Fish Market. The market is the beating heart of the Southwest’s fishing industry and the largest fish market in Cornwall.
The visit highlighted the importance of the Cornish fishing industry. It also underlined the vital role it plays in supplying high-quality, sustainable, British-caught seafood to wholesale and retail businesses, restaurants, markets and homes across the UK.
Showcasing Cornish Seafood
During their tour, both Ministers praised the quality and diversity of fish on display. They described the market as a true showcase of Cornish seafood at its finest.
The auction floor demonstrated the exceptional range of species landed daily by the Cornish fleet. These included hake, monkfish, sardines, brown crab and scallops.
In addition, the Ministers observed how chilled, well-iced fish is carefully handled by the experienced W Stevenson & Sons market team. Their passion and professionalism ensure the highest standards are met every day. As a result, Cornish seafood reaches businesses, restaurants and homes in excellent condition.
Listening to the Fishing Industry
The visit also gave Ministers the chance to hear directly from the Cornish fishing community. Fishermen and seafood businesses spoke about current challenges. These included access to fishing grounds, marine planning and the need for future sustainability.
Paul Trebilcock, Chair of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation (CFPO) and W Stevenson & Sons, said:
“It’s encouraging to see Ministers genuinely listening and committing to work with fishermen, not just talk at them.”
Furthermore, the Ministers committed to returning to Cornwall in 12 months to review progress. This promise showed their intent to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the sector.
Cornish Seafood and UK Food Security
Another key theme of the visit was the importance of seafood to UK food security. Cornish fish and shellfish are fresh, nutritious and sustainable. They are also an essential source of protein that supports both healthy diets and rural economies.
The Ministers recognised the role Cornish seafood plays in the UK’s new national food strategy. In addition, they noted the need to support fishing communities to secure the long-term future of the industry.
Looking Ahead
The visit to Newlyn Fish Market demonstrated the strength, resilience and innovation within the Cornish fishing industry. It also reinforced the need for government and industry to work together. In particular, both sides must balance environmental sustainability with national food security.
At W Stevenson & Sons, we are proud to champion Cornish seafood. Every day we ensure it reaches homes, restaurants and markets across the UK. With government recognition and closer collaboration, we look forward to building a stronger and sustainable future for fishing in Cornwall.
